Relationscapes

I imagine the expanses depicted in this series of diptychs as “relationscapes” — meditations on my relationship to land and memories of emotional exchanges with the natural world. This series translates landscape imagery from my painted journal into mixed media works on wooden panel.

The loose, quasi-calligraphic handwriting in these images is a loving nod to my grandmother, a vivacious and creative woman who burned her poetry when she got married. Inscribing words directly into the landscape in these compositions feels like a form of incantation, summoning her writing back to life and tattooing it onto the earth itself.
